Hainan Island: China's Tropical Tech Frontier — 6 Days
The other China
Forget everything you know about China. Hainan is different.
This is tropical China — palm trees, rainforest, volcanic soil, beaches. It sits at the same latitude as Hawaii, and the Chinese call it exactly that. But Hainan is far more than a beach destination.
Three things that make Hainan unique
1. The Li people. Hainan’s indigenous inhabitants, with weaving traditions so refined that UNESCO protects them. They’ve lived here for over 3,000 years, long before “China” reached this far south.
2. The rainforest. Yanoda and Jianfengling are real tropical rainforest — canopy walks, waterfalls, plant species found nowhere else. Most foreign tourists have no idea China has jungle.
3. The Free Trade Port. Hainan is mid-transformation into the world’s largest free trade port — a bold experiment that will define how China trades with the world for the next generation. You’ll see it being built.
Why go now
Hainan in 2026 is a once-in-a-century transition. In ten years, the old fishing villages and rainforest trails will be much harder to find. This is the moment to see both layers at once.

Frequently asked questions
Is Hainan just a beach destination? +
No. Beyond the famous Sanya beaches, Hainan has tropical rainforest, volcanic geology, a unique indigenous Li culture, and is currently being developed as China's largest Free Trade Port — a massive economic experiment.
What's special about the Li people? +
The Li are Hainan's original inhabitants, with a distinct language and culture. Their textile traditions — particularly spinning and weaving — are so significant that UNESCO inscribed them. You'll see techniques still practiced as they have been for centuries.
What is the Free Trade Port? +
Hainan is being turned into a special economic zone larger than any free trade port in the world — by 2025 it aims for full duty-free status. It's China's boldest current economic experiment, and visible in the construction everywhere.
